Dear

We have reached the final newsletter of 2024! And what a year it has been; elections here in London, across the UK and abroad have brought with them mixed and oftentimes conflicting emotions including, excitement, frustration, despair and dare I say it, hope! What this means for children and their families experiencing poverty in London it is perhaps still hard to discern, but as we approach 2025 there are reasons for optimism. Yesterday the GLA, at the request of the Cabinet Office, held an event at City Hall looking at how actors across London; local authorities, schools and nurseries, the NHS, ICBs, funders and the voluntary and community sector can come together to contribute to the Government’s Child Poverty Strategy, due to be published next summer. I was struck by how, despite the enormous challenges of the past few years, there was a real sense of focus in the room and dedication to turning the tide on child poverty by tackling its systemic causes. Into the New Year, 4in10 will continue to take a full and active part in these conversations, facilitating the involvement of our members in them and ensuring that your voices are heard loud and clear.

4in10 Conference: “Make Childcare Make Sense” How can we make childcare and early education more accessible and affordable for low-income families in London?

On Tuesday 21 January 2025 we are holding a half-day conference on childcare at City Hall hosted by Marina Ahmad AM to hear about the experiences of families living on low incomes when it comes to childcare and early education and discuss the actions that are needed to make these services more accessible and affordable for them.

Over the past year, a number of key reports have been published looking at these issues. These include the London Assembly Economy Committee’s Early years childcare in London report, Business LDN’s No Kidding, How transforming childcare can boost the economy report and 4in10’s own ‘Make Childcare Make Sense for families on low incomes in London’ report. We now want to reflect on their collective findings and look at how their recommendations can now be actioned and implemented.

The event will take place from 10:00 – 13:00 at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE. Places are free but going fast so book your place TODAY. More details and booking here.

And finally

We always encourage members to show our logo where possible, so everyone knows that you are part of a movement that is working for a child poverty free London.

You are welcome to pass this newsletter onto your networks. We welcome new members and although much of what we do is available to members and non-members, members are the first to know and get first chance to book training and so on.

As well as your reports, news and data, please send us information about small local grant givers, discounts and vouchers available, new support services, in fact anything that might help alleviate the impact of poverty in small ways and support other organisations to do their work. We will continue to demand systemic change but hope that these tips will be of immediate use. Anything you can share send it our way!

Check your entry on the 4in10 database of all voluntary organisations changing and challenging the impact of poverty on London’s children and their families. Let us know of any errors or changes you would like and please tell us about any organisations we may have missed.

With very best wishes

Maddie, Katherine & Emily
