Dear

London Challenge Poverty Week  2024

As this newsletter arrives in your inboxes, some of you will be touring the country; attending the party conferences to persuade our politicians to address deepening poverty and gaping inequality. Others of you remain in London working in myriad ways to alleviate both the material deprivation and mental strain that poverty causes for so many families. What we all share is a sense that now more than ever we need to raise our collective voice to a volume where it can no longer be ignored. London Challenge Poverty Week, which takes place from 14 – 20 October, is one opportunity for us to do just that! If you haven’t yet decided how you will take part NOW is the time to do so - visit the website for inspiration.

The What’s On page is now live on the LCPW website with details of events for you to take part in, these include the ever-popular London Child Poverty Summit on Monday 14 October; a range of fabulous webinars from partners including Just Fair, Policy in Practice and Cash Perks; report launches from IRMO and Coram Family and Childcare and an Open House event hosted by ATD Fourth World. If you have any events or activities taking place you’d like us to share let us know as soon as possible.

And a couple of quick reminders:

  • We still have a few spaces for the Data Essentials for Raising Voice and Influencing Change training session for those taking part in LCPW on 1st October. Book here.
  • Our social media toolkit to help you take part in LCPW via your socials is coming very soon – keep an eye out for it on the website

4in10 Policy Forum

The next meeting of our Policy Forum will take place on 8 October 11am – 12.30pm. We will be discussing  how we can influence the Government’s forthcoming child poverty strategy and how we can make sure that the experiences of migrant and refugee children are included in this. Use this link to join the meeting.

Spotlight Interview

We are delighted to have another Spotlight Interview to bring you, this time from our fantastic member The Family Fund. Grab yourself a cuppa and read it here.

Calls To Action

  • 4in10 is gathering evidence about young people, parents and carers and their experience moving around the city, to present to the London Assembly Transport Committee which is conducting an investigation into Accessibility and Inclusion in Transport Planning.  We want to draw attention to experiences of exclusion from public transportation that families living on low incomes face. Evidence we'd like to collect may be about fare costs, lack of availability of transportation, safety, lack of awareness, service unreliability, complexity of travel across London or something else. To share any stories or data you have, please email Emily at emily.barker@4in10.org.uk before 30th September.

  • Action for Children are asking people to  'Tell your MP: Every child in care deserves a loving home'
  • Centre for Young Lives and The Play Commission are gathering evidence and expertise to inform the policy recommendations. They are calling for organisations and individuals with professional expertise or lived experience to share their knowledge and views by submitting evidence to their commission.
  • Contact wants to find out about the financial situation for UK families with disabled children
  • Z2K are calling for people to ask [their] MP to defend vital disability benefits ahead of the Autumn Budget

And finally

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) have recently produced a blog post highlighting their membership of 4in10. You can see it here.

If you are able please do the same.

Also we always encourage members to show our logo where possible, so everyone knows that you are part of a movement that is working for a child poverty free London.

You are welcome to pass this newsletter onto your networks. We welcome new members and although much of what we do is available to members and non-members, members are the first to know and get first chance to book training and so on.

As well as your reports, news and data, please send us information about small local grant givers, discounts and vouchers available, new support services, in fact anything that might help alleviate the impact of poverty in small ways and support other organisations to do their work. We will continue to demand systemic change but hope that these tips will be of immediate use. Anything you can share send it our way!

Check your entry on the 4in10 database of all voluntary organisations changing and challenging the impact of poverty on London’s children and their families. Let us know of any errors or changes you would like and please tell us about any organisations we may have missed.

With very best wishes

Maddie, Katherine & Emily
